Flaming Gorge Country

Green River
Winding through the stunning Southwest Wyoming landscape and its namesake town, the mighty Green River offers something fun at every bend for kayaking, rafting, canoeing, tubing and fly-fishing. In the heart of the city of Green River, the Green River Whitewater Park and Tubing Channel offers everything from challenging rapids to gentle wading pools. River-goers can wade, swim, tube or take the plunge on up to four-foot drops. Advanced kayakers are known for taking on the southern channel, where Castle Falls churns. For longer floats, drop a raft, kayak or canoe in at Jamestown just upstream from Green River, and meander down to take out at the whitewater park.
Red Desert
For a true off the grid experience, head to the high desert in Sweetwater County known as the Red Desert. A portion of the Continental Divide known as the Great Divide Basin runs through the county, east of Rock Springs and Green River. Here you’ll find a dry region filled with desert flora and fauna, undisturbed wildlife and magnificent landmarks. Explore the Oregon Buttes Wilderness Study Area near Farson for wildlife photography, scenic vistas, hiking, horseback riding and more. The Red Desert is also home to the second largest active sand dunes in the world, Killpecker Sand Dunes where you can experience some high-flying fun ATVing, sand sledding and hiking!
White Mountain Petroglyphs
Discover the White Mountain Petroglyphs where you will find a unique version of Southwest Wyoming’s history told through etchings in the sandstone walls of White Mountain. The Plains and Great Basin Native Americans who lived in the left behind a legacy of their lifestyle in the form of hundreds of fascinating sandstone carvings. White Mountain is a part of the Green River Formation which was formed by Lake Gosiute over 30 million years ago. If you search the base of White Mountain, you may be able to find shells from another era.
