I have a confession: I never saw myself as a bib-wearer. As a woman that is comfortable dropping trou’ just about anywhere when nature calls, I didn’t see how it was possible to not do a full frontal flash with a one-piece on. I’m also a user of pockets. I carry snacks, my phone, chapstick, and other odds and ends when I ride and most bibs are not conducive to accessory carrying.
I’d see other women in bibs and love the style, but I just didn’t think they were for me. Then, I found the latest from Pearl Izumi. Their women’s Interval Cargo Bib Short is ultralight, insanely comfortable and features not one, but two, pockets to easily carry my essentials.
MSRP: $165
Pros: These bibs are made for long days in the saddle. They are cool and breathable, stay put (no riding up!) and have some great features. On the feature front, thanks to the open mesh side pocket panels, I don’t need to wear a traditional jersey with pockets. Instead, I have quick access to snacks, my cell phone and other necessities right on my legs. They are incredibly breathable and the chamois has the perfect amount of cushion. These bibs also have just the right amount of give thanks to the nylon/polyester blend, without too much compression, but are still capable of staying pulled up for bathroom breaks.
Cons: While I like a lighter chamois, not everyone does. I know that not all bums are created equally and some riders prefer a thicker chamois. If that’s your preference and you need something with more oomph, check out their Pro bib. It’s a thicker material and lacks pockets, but still a great fit!
Where I took it: Road rides, gravel rides and mountain biking around southern Colorado in the spring and summer.
