The Green River Chamber of Commerce/ Visitor Center would like to announce the 17th Annual “Run with the Horses Marathon” scheduled to take place on Saturday, August 15th 2020. This Marathon is located in Green River Wyoming, 2-1/2 hours East of Salt Lake City, a city of 12,000 people nestled in the Green River Basin which was created by a long extinct ancient inland sea. Elevation is 6,100 feet however the course elevation will increase approximately 1,200’ within the first 5 miles.
This event will include 3 different races, the Marathon, the ½ Marathon and also the 10K run. These races will begin and end at the Expedition Island in Green River where Major John Wesley Powell began his great adventure which ultimately lead to the discovery of the Grand Canyon. The official start time for each race is 7:00 am. Due to Covid-19 each race may start separately depending on our States Health orders at the time.
This marathon has a reputation of being challenging, but yet very rewarding. Runners proceed through town, on to the Wild Horse Canyon Loop and then turn and follow the same route back hoping to catch a glimpse of a herd of horses running next to you. During this race you can expect to see a navigation beacon for the Calvary, Pony Express and the Settlers that traveled west in their wagon trains. The course will be clearly marked, with police officers stopping traffic as you cross the intersections, so you don’t have to slow your pace! There will be aid stations every two miles with water, PowerAde and energy snacks alternating at each station with our volunteers cheering you on!
This event brings nationwide attention, and is gaining worldwide awareness with 7 other Countries represented. Are you up for this challenge? Can you run with the horses? Marathon and ½ Marathon runners will receive a truly one of a kind shirt and medal for completing the race. 10k Runners will receive a medal and have the option to purchase a t-shirt. There will also be individual awards for those that finish in the top three of both men and women.
For those flying in from a great distance there is an international airport in Salt Lake City, approximately 120 miles to the West. There is also Southwest Wyoming Regional Airport which is located in Rock Springs, Wyoming, which is 17 miles East of Green River. The race will be professionally timed and is more efficient as the results are immediate.
Before and after the race you will be able to enjoy our towns great scenic views, rich history and recreation opportunities. The river flows through a broad steep-sided valley with remarkable rock formations, 28 to be exact which are known as the “Green River Formation.” Toll Gate and the Palisades are our most famous rock formation due to Thomas Moran’s breathtaking oil painting “The Cliffs of Green River.” Downstream of Expedition Island on the south bank of the river is the Green Belt Nature area. This area contains a nature path which runs along the edge of the river. Water Fowl and other types of bird nests in the tall grass and bushes. Further to the south of the southern edge of the river is Scotts Bottom Nature area. Like the Green Belt, the Scotts Bottom Nature area has paths along that include the Wilkins Peak Trail System and interpretive signs which tell of the wildlife which live in this riparian habitat along the edge of the Green River. With 17 trails the Wilkins Peak Trail system are the most popular bike trail system in the state of Wyoming for 4 years running on singletracks.com. The Green River offers excellent fishing for Rainbow, Brown Trout and Catfish. World-class fishing at the Lake Flaming Gorge for Rainbow, Brown Trout, Kokanee Salmon, Mackinaw and is accessible from Wyoming Highway 530.
