Booze News: Summer Smiles

Let’s be honest, so far, 2020 has sucked. But, instead of sitting around mourning what could have, should have, and would have happened if Covid-19 had not crashed the new decade, it’s time to enjoy some sunshine. One of the best ways we can think of chasing the blues away is by loading up on some tasty brews and enjoying all that this season has to offer. Here are six that we recommend.

Paulaner Hefe-Weizen might just be the perfect summer beer. Crafted by one of the oldest breweries in the world, they started in 1634, this beer epitomizes the perfection Bavarian brewers bring to their craft. It’s banana, clove, and mango flavors balance nicely with the floral scents prevalent with every sip.

From the moment Prost Brewing Company opened in Denver, they did things differently. You will not find any IPA’s, Sours, or such in their lineup, only full-flavored beers that pay homage to one of the best beer regions in the world, Germany. Their Kölsch has a crisp flavor that cleans the palate the moment it touches your tongue. We can’t think of a better brew to crack when the temperature closes in on triple digits.

Newcomer Westbound & Down has been garnering a lot of attention in the last few years, culminating in their award for Best Mid-Sized Brewpub at last year’s GABF. Well, luckily for all of us, they have started canning their beers. One to grab for this summer is their sublimely smooth Italian Pils. It will make you ever wonder why you thought that Bud Lt you had in your youth was a good beer once, this is how Pilsners should be.

With the cancellation of any and all concerts this summer, many of us will be stuck sitting around reminiscing about shows gone by while tunes float from nearby speakers. What better beer to accompany these reminiscences than one made by Denver’s original Heavy Metal brewpub? Trve Brewing Co has been getting after it from day one, and their recently released Buried Sun deserves a spot in your cooler. It’s one hell of a Saison beer that will make you forget about your woes for a moment or two.

Wild Provisions Beer Project opened only a few months ago, right in the middle of the lockdown madness, in Boulder. Created by the founders of 4 Noses Brewing, it aims to explore new methods and techniques to craft some memorable brews. Focusing on spontaneous and mixed fermentation Sours and old school Czech-style open-fermented Lagers, it is one of the more exciting recent additions to the Colorado brewing scene. If their Old Bones, a golden sour beer with Nectarine and Cascade Hops is any indication, something special is happening here. Head to their tasting room or order online to get one.

Lastly, no summer beer list would be complete without an IPA. Sanitas Brewing’s View From Above is an ideal summer sipper. This limited-edition brew does not overwhelm you with pine scents and flavors prevalent in so many beers from this style these days. No, instead, its subtle flavors draw you in with each sip instantly offering refreshment and taste. Leave those other hop bombs for later when the weather gets colder.

Go grab a few of these beers and start looking forward to a time when life has returned to a bit more normalcy. 2021 can’t be worse than this, can it?
