Skiers and boarders in Colorado have plenty to be thankful for this November, thanks to recent storms that blanketed much of the state in fresh powder, prompting many resorts to open early.
For months, talk of an epic winter forecast has been circling through the snowsports community, upping the stoke level and creating a countdown rivaling a kid’s countdown to Christmas. Powder. Dumping. El Niño. The anticipation has continued to grow—finally reaching an all-time high during the third week of November when Winter Storm Ajax blessed mountain resorts with so much fresh snow, that many lifts started running early. The first round of snowfall left a stagering twenty-six inches of snow in the small town of Telluride, while the neighboring town of Silverton received twenty-four inches. Winter Park, whose resort opened up on November 18th, received ten inches of snow, and Arapahoe Basin, Copper Mountain, and Loveland all welcomed six inches of new snow to their open runs, adding to the heavy snowfall all three mountains received earlier in the month.
With more snow on the way, more mountains are announcing opening dates which are set to take place in the near future. Eldora and Monarch Mountain are set to open on November 20. Aspen and Snowmass will officially open on November 21. Crested Butte and Steamboat will kick off their seasons on November 25, and Telluride has announced November 26 for their opening day.
