Outdoors. Craft Beer. Adventure Sports. Music. All things that represent the unique vibe and spirit found in the state of Colorado, and Boulder-based photographer, Eddie Clark, is behind the scenes of it all. A long-time professional photographer, Clark’s work has been featured in everything from big-time editorial publications to popular commercial marketing campaigns, and his work just keeps getting better. Get to know this avid outdoor adventurer and follow along as the talented photog shares some of his favorite photos on our Instagram page this week.
1.) What inspired you to pursue photography as a profession?
I’ve been shooting photos since I was a kid, but only considered it as a real job after being encouraged by friends and family roughly 10 years ago. That’s when I realized I could make a living doing the things I like doing (riding bikes, being outside, drinking good beer and taking photos), with people I like in the places I want to be instead of grinding my life away in a cube for The Man.
2.) Where is your favorite place to go outside and play?
I have a lot of favorite outdoor playgrounds, and the best is usually where I happen to be at that time. James Peak Wilderness in the winter is my most special place, but Fruita, Crested Butte and Breckenridge also rank very high on that list.
3.) What event has been your favorite to shoot so far?
Breck Epic is one I look forwards to every year for the awesome big mountain riding and ColoRADo fun times. I also have to mention Red Bull Rampage because it’s just so over the top in so many ways, it’s the pinnacle of freeride mountain biking. Rampage is easily the most demanding and dangerous event I shoot.
4.) How do you prepare when shooting a fast-paced, large-scale event?
My preparation for a big event starts months ahead of time with securing clients and logistics. A few days prior I’ll start reviewing images I’ve shot in the past if it’s one I’ve done before so my photography is fresh and I don’t repeat my work. If it’s totally new to me, or there are new aspects of it, I’ll pre-ride the course(s) to have my game plan dialed for race day, which is the fun part. Then there’s the technical aspects which involve making sure all my gear is fully charged, cleaned, backed up and ready to roll before I walk out my front door. Preparation is a vital key to success.
5.) What are you working on right now?
My next big shoot is in Crested Butte where I’ll be shooting the first ever Fat Bike World Championships. I’ve been looking forwards to this one for a while, it’s going to be a great time for sure.
