Every fall something wonderful happens across the planet. For three weeks in late September, and early October, hordes of thirsty drinkers flock to Oktoberfest celebrations to celebrate the changing of the season the best way possible. By quaffing copious amounts of beer, eating grilled meats, and listening to live music.
Colorado has several celebrations, but the best one this coming weekend is happening in Longmont at Roosevelt Park. Sponsored by Lefthand Brewing Company, there will be ten different local breweries pouring their finest. Getting in on the act will be Oskar Blues, Pumphouse Brewery, 300 Suns, Grossen Bart, Long’s Peak Tap House, Shoes & Brews, Skeye Brewing, Wibby Brewing, Industrial Revolution, and the aforementioned Lefthand.
But, the fun does not stop there. Lefthand will be grilling a 340-foot long sausage to feed the masses, plus there will be stein holding contests, malt sack races, and other German inspired games. Providing a backdrop to the zaniness will be twelve different bands cranking out tunes. Friday night the headliners are The Wailers, the very same band that once backed Bob Marley. Saturday night is helmed by The Bright Light Social Hours, a psychedelic jam band. Plus, generous Polka Music between acts.
The festivities start Friday at 4pm when the Mayor of Longmont will lead a bike parade with the first keg of Oktoberfest beer onto the grounds to tap under the beer tent. There is a suggested donation of $5 to enter, all proceeds will benefit Habitat for Humanity of the St Vrain Valley, and the Left Hand Brewing Foundation.
So dig out your lederhosen, or some other silly outfit, and head to Longmont. Blankets, chairs, and sleeping bags are welcome, but not your dog.
