Since 1961 Mountain Equipment has been committed to making proven outdoor clothing and equipment. It’s this approach to design that lets our customers go above & beyond.
In 2009 Mountain Equipment became one of the first outdoor brands to introduce independent auditing of our down supply chain. Quietly introduced, without fanfare or press-releases, DOWN CODEX® set out to understand an industry and supply-chain that was largely ignored and certainly understood.
With key commitments to address issues of both animal welfare and raw material quality it was a world-first. Despite being told that auditing supply chains and forcing change where necessary were impossible, we stayed the course.
With a commitment to physically inspect supply chains across the world and identifying that ethically sourced down was ultimately about risk-management and knowledge, DOWN CODEX® was, and is, far more than simply a certificate. It was ground-breaking.
A genuine step-forward.
By sharing those experiences and that knowledge with the wider industry we forced others to take note. We proved that collectively the impossible might just be possible.
Now more than five years on from the start of DOWN CODEX®, we have passed significant milestone on this journey, with 100% of the down that we use in our products now coming from audited and traceable sources. All products contain a code that can be entered into our DOWN CODEX® website to trace the down that they contain. Not only can you identify the source and the down batch results can also be viewed.
These key parts of our commitment to creating the most comprehensive auditing mechanism and the most transparent down supply chain in the outdoor industry anywhere in the world. We remain the only company to publish our audit and test results.
