Postcards From the Weekend: Powder Touring

They say “there are no friends on powder days”— which is probably true — until you have kids.

Southern Colorado is in the throws of a great storm cycle, but while friends fill flasks, wax skis and head for first chair, we load up the family and pull in just shy of Wolf Creek Ski Area to a lesser-traveled spot. Why? Because: children. As I strap a baby to my chest and click into my touring setup, my husband straps skis to our two-year-old and gathers the rest of the gear. I watch in admiration. It amazes me to see the stoke in our son’s eyes.

We tour along the forest road in the silence of the falling snow, my daughter sighs deeply, my son laughs loudly, and I’m feeling fulfilled, even if I’m not chasing deep pow just up the road from where I stand.

I still get powder days on the mountain, but this one is for the family. And that’s ok with me.
