Boom Goes the Yogurt

Boom Yogurt Bar

A joint project with his wife Kelly, Olympic triathlete Matty “Boom Boom” Reed’s new yogurt bar aspires to bring all-natural breakfast options and healthy pre- and post- workout snacks to Colorado’s endurance sports community and beyond. Based in Boulder, Boom Yogurt features locally-made yogurt, frozen yogurt, cottage cheese and hot oatmeal. EO sat down with Reed, to talk about his new venture:

We imagine your diet is critical right now, with the Ironman World Championships coming up. What did you eat for breakfast at Boom this morning?
I actually mixed all the natural yogurts together—the Greek one with Noosa, Wallaby, Horizon and Nancy’s, and then mixed all the local granolas together on top of that. So there’s Boulder Granola in there, Bulumu and Bearclaw. For fruits, I did berries, although mango is usually my favorite. Then topped it all with honey.

What are your responsibilities here?
Ask Kelly [laughs]. Actually, I was supposed to get the five yogurt dispensers flowing this morning before any customers got here and I forgot. Do you mind? [Gets up and goes down the line flushing the first inch or so or yogurt out of each nozzle into a bowl.]

So, are you going to eat that?
Noooo. . . that first bit isn’t exactly the best. Plus, I’m pretty full. Eating natural, unprocessed granola, fresh fruit, and local yogurt is a really sustaining meal. It sticks with you, you know?

You go out of your way to use local, natural products. Why all the effort, what’s the value?
Given our sport, we really look at food as fuel. It’s got to be healthy, and high energy. We wanted to provide more than just a snack or a dessert. Think of the food here as an energy bar in a bowl. Food in its raw form is always going to maintain more of the nutrient quality. Minimally processed granola, for example, is heartier and healthier, more of a complex carbohydrate. And you can’t beat handmade local products for quality and taste. It’s how our family eats, it’s how our friends eat, and we wanted to share those values with the community. [Boom Yogurt also serves as a community meeting space.]
