Costume Crusades

EERIE ERIE 5K & 10K
October 29 • Erie
The city of Erie couldn’t have asked for a better name come Halloween. Otherwise, well, it’s just a lake that EO’s managing editor grew up next to in Ohio—which doesn’t exactly draw costumed runners. This annual 5K and 10K is a fundraiser for the Optimist Club of Erie. Thank God for Halloween.

CAMPBELL’S GHOST CHASE 5K
October 29 • Arvada
This Saturday morning 5k run/walk doesn’t specify whether competitors are chasing or being chased by ghosts. Either way, we assume they can’t be seen without some sort of special paranormal-detecting polarized lens, so it’s really a moot point. Focus instead on winning the race’s “craziest costume” contest—but keep it clean, this is a family event.

PHANTOM 4-MILER
October 29 • Loveland
This 4-mile race starts with a free “Bone Chilling Breakfast” at the Embassy Suites hotel. Every kid who participates in the 2k-fun run will get a medal, and it’s the only race in the area that encourages runners to bring their dogs, in costume, of course. Prizes go to the best adult, team, child and dog costume. And yes, you must be an actual dog to win the best dog costume prize.

THE MONSTER DASH 5K
October 29 • Louisville
This old town Louisville race doesn’t start until 3:00 p.m., which means you could technically put in a costumed 5k two-a-day, running in Denver, Boulder, Arvada, Loveland or Erie first. Or just sleep in and race the Louisville Monster Dash in your pj’s—they count as a costume.

COLORADO CROSS CLASSIC
October 30 • Boulder
Cyclocross racing is, by its very nature, bloody muddy debauchery on a bike. But come Halloween weekend, it’s even more fun to race (and spectate) when the locals come out in their All Hallow’s Eve finest. Who can forget the year that the Boulder-based Title Nine women’s team turned their ‘cross bikes into witches brooms?

SPOOKTACULAR 5K
October 29 • Fort Collins
Held at the Spring Canyon Community Park, this scenic course includes every type of terrain—asphalt, dirt bike trail, sidewalk and gravel, as well as spooks of all ages. Costume contest prizes go three-deep for men and women, and there are kids’ events throughout the day. Proceeds benefit the Children’s Speech and Reading Center.
