It’s an unfortunate fact: we are in the throes of a winter season shaken by on-going avalanche news, including 11 fatalities – more than Colorado has experienced in nearly a decade – from incidents occurring across the state.
Unsurprisingly, avalanche safety and backcountry awareness are especially hot topics this season, with conversations circulating across all backcountry audiences. And in those conversations, companies like TINCUP (well known for their whiskey made with Colorado-sourced water), Weston (award-winning splitboard, ski and snowboard manufacturer) and AIARE (American Institute of Avalanche Research and Education – leaders in avalanche education and research) are at the forefront.
The companies’ collaboration aims to encourage and enable safe adventure this winter by providing outdoor enthusiasts with a chance to win limited edition skis and splitboards featuring artwork created by Renan Ozturk. Only available “to those willing to get the education they need before exploring the backcountry”, TINCUP, Weston and AIARE have created quite the desirable carrot.
I had the opportunity to tour Bluebird Backcountry this season and learn a little bit about the initiative…while ogling a pair of the much-sought after, limited edition skis. A perfect spot to talk avalanche safety, Bluebird Backcountry provides an inbounds backcountry experience. No lift lines (because there are no lifts), great touring opportunities and super fun downhill and tree lines. It’s a great option for any skier/snowboarder, but especially for those new to backcountry travel, thanks to avy education opportunities ranging from backcountry skills courses to AIARE avalanche education courses.
You’re probably still wondering about those Weston skis and splitboards, aren’t you? Getting the download while touring near Bluebird’s Meat Hill, it turns out the only way you can get your hands on the goods is to learn some avalanche safety by way of the TINCUP x Weston x AIARE sweepstakes quiz. This 20+ question quiz tests your knowledge and is based on the AIARE education framework.
The sweepstakes ends on April 15th, but the knowledge can continue well past that date…if you’re willing.
