In the 70s and 80s high tops were the only style climbing shoe available. Designed with crack climbing in mind, these old clunkers protected the ankles and provided excellent foot support.
However, over the past 20 years the high top has become nearly extinct, replaced with low tops and aggressive sport shoes. This is a shame for the wide-crack officiados who must tape their ankles when tackling endless offwidths in Yosemite, Vedauwoo and beyond.
Evolv’s Astroman fills this void, due in stores this fall. Reminiscent of the old Fire’s in regards to color and decorative ankle patches, these shoes were designed for the archytipcal trad dad. The 3/4 height nubuck leather uppers protect the flesh without compromising freedom of movement. The flat footbed is supportive and precise.
The Astromans work equally well for beginner climbers who just need a durable, comfy shoe all the way up to Yosemite hardmen and women (or those who want to look seasoned and hard).
