Best Day in Years: Going Deep in the Butte

Finally. Two dismal winters, one fun (but low-precip) trip to Valdez, and this last week I finally got some blowtastic, deep-and-delicious turns, courtesy of the weather gods, Crested Butte Mountain Guides, and my understanding wife, Rebel. I headed to the Butte to float the idea of working down there to the CBMG boss, Jayson Simons-Jones. Being an understanding and charitable bloke, he entertained my scheming, but suggested we do it over some turns, rather than dusting off the business suits and briefcases. And a-ha, luckily for us, on the last days of winter the weather gods delivered a bunch of snow and a bit of wind. Combine that with local knowledge and some hot-damn terrain and we found ourselves The Goods.

Jayson brought along two of his guides, Evan Ross and Scott Krankkala, and our little foursome rallye’d the sleds up Slate Creek last Thursday morn. Storm totals were up towards 15 inches and with a west wind blowing, east-facing shots were filled in even more. Deeper than I’ve skied in a few years, that’s for sure. Big thanks to the CBMG gang, Rebel, and a late-season storm that rekindled the stoke! I’m headed to Revelstoke Wednesday, so stay tuned for pics. In the meantime, get a load of the world-class terrain and snow down in the Butte. One phone call, a couple hours in the car, and you too can get some…
