Bristol Bay, Alaska, is home the world’s largest sockeye and king salmon runs and if either of two foreign corporations gets its way, it will also host a 54-square-mile open-pit mine. In unearthing gold, copper, and molybdenum, the Pebble Mine will generate an estimated 10 billion tons of toxic heavy metals and waste material. According to Trout Unlimited and Patagonia, three quarters of Bristol’s local residents oppose the project, though–big surprise–the state of Alaska hasn’t listened to their concerns and hasn’t acted to protect the fishery.
But I thought Sarah Palin LOVED the great outdoors and her mama grizzlies? What are they going to eat–arsenic salmon filets?!
