Hero on the Bike

Everybody wants to be a hero…most of all me. Here’s your chance and mine…the “Hero Kit,” a pre-packaged deal-with-almost-anything kit specifically designed to save your bacon (or somebody else’s!) while out cycling. Jason Berv, the founder and inventor of Hero Kits, created them to give everybody an easy, useful system to handle the most common cycling emergencies. It’s a cool idea, just grab it off the shelf and you’ve got yourself a workable collection of tools, including instructions–no more piecing together patch kits, multi-tools, etc…Berv’s also planning Hero Kits for other sports, like backcountry skiing: stay tuned.

The cycling Hero Kit has some smart stuff in it, like water-purification tablets (ever run out of water 15 miles from the trailhead?), a master link for nine-speed chains, a Tyvek patch for a gashed tire, all-purpose zip ties, a derailleur cable, wet wipe (priceless!), a couple random bolts to fix a stem or seat-binder…etc.

A pretty solid little package–this thing will get you out of most jams you’ll encounter on the trail or road.

Forty-five bucks might seem spendy at first, but if you part out the kit and price each individual component, it’s actually a good deal. Multi-tools are at least $20 alone…and you get a 12-function one, plus all the other gizmos in there. I imagine these will be the rage in ski towns–anybody renting a bike should grab one a Hero Kit and a map, no matter what.

All the goods, exploded view on my table…

Check out the website and keep your ear to the ground for the ski version…I’m interested to see what Berv puts together for that one!
