Day one, down. We spent the morning in the classroom at the Highland Center in Crawford Notch State Park, in the shadow of Mount Washington. Shadow would be an overstatement, though, as the day dawned with a couple inches of really low-density snow on the ground and windy, cloudy conditions. After our classroom sessions, we headed to the Amphitheater area of Frankenstein Cliff, just down the hill. We all got a lap on something moderate (WI 3-4) and were at the cars before dark. Rushing to get outta there, I jumped in the car with my harness and helmet still on–check out the creepy grin.
Here you can see the “The Smear,” a relatively moderate line in good conditions, but the upper part was detached and kinda bitchy after last week’s rain–two inches in seven hours! Despite highs in the teens and twenties, water is still flowing on most formations.
Tomorrow we head to “Willy’s Slide,” a multipitch venue, perfect for practicing transitions and the like. Pics to follow!
