For those of you following the Christopher Loven cyclist-fatality case, we’re still in a holding pattern. The Colorado State Patrol (CSP) has yet to conclude its investigation and it will be up to their organization whether or not to arrest Loven, 45, of Boulder, and refer the case to Boulder County District Attorney’s office.
Loven was driving westbound (uphill) in Lefthand Canyon on June 17 of this year, when he failed to yield to a descending cyclist, Eugene Howrey, 73. Loven turned his truck (towing earth-moving equipment) towards Olde Stage Road in front of Howrey, who collided with the vehicle and died at the scene of multiple injuries.
CSP Sergeant Mark Mason explained the accident investigation is nearing completion. The CSP will decide whether or not to issue an arrest warrant, at which point the Boulder County DA’s office is notified and then the case falls to them, along with decision to file charges. It should be noted this is an “if”–because there was a fatality is no guarantee charges will be filed. And Loven’s history of harassing cyclists–a conviction and a citation within the Boulder County justice system–is not taken into account when investigating his latest incident.
Stay tuned.
Along the lines of cyclist safety, my brother up in Bozeman forwarded me an interesting graphic summarizing cycling injuries. Compiled by Christensen Law Firm, it’s an interesting look at the most common injuries cyclists endure. Give a look–and bottom line: get a good bike fit and wear a helmet!
