Our little man Luca must be starting to teeth (teethe?), because he’s upstairs hollering like a caged bobcat. Poor little guy! Momma’s with him, so I’m surfing downstairs. I visited the Black Diamond site, just to see if they’d posted any ski video of late, and lo and behold I came across a pretty inspired post, detailing a huge avalanche and another AvaLung success story. Give it a read and see what you think.
I own an AvaLung, but I rarely ski with it. Why? I guess I’m focused entirely on avoidance these days…which makes sense, but then again we all make mistakes and an AvaLung can certainly make the difference between living and dying. Another factor in my not using it comes down to trauma–in Colorado we ski below treeline so frequently, and our snowpack is so shallow (relatively), it just seems like an AvaLung (or even ABS pack) would be far less effective/necessary because one’s chances of dying due to trauma are so much higher here than in Europe or Canada. Am I fooling myself? Is this a good kick-in-the-ass reminder to ski with a ‘Lung, even if it only improves my chances of surviving an avalanche by five percent?
Yeah, maybe it is. I’ll get out touring Monday, so who knows…maybe I’ll bring along the AvaLung. It’s a smart, effective tool…whether in Colorado or beyond.
Sounds like Luca’s calmed down a bit…long live Tylenol and a patient momma.
