Rechargable Case for iPhone

Last week I went out bouldering in the Flatirons with a small group of Boulderites (Boulder, CO, locals). Temps were perfect, not too cold, not too hot, and everyone was climbing well. That is, when they weren’t obsessively on their iPhones checking Facebook, snapping pics, making calls and texting. My phone was the first to die since I spent the morning using the mapping app to locate the meeting area and doing so quickly drained the battery. (I’m new in town and thus rely heavily on Google Maps.) Instead of updating my FB status that day, I merely climbed.

The solution to this problem, my tech-savvy friend, is the Energizer AP1201 rechargeable case for iPhone 4 which costs $69.99. This case definitely adds weight and bulk to your phone — hope you don’t mind it resembling a small tank,  — but it also protects your spendy gadget since it’s made of “form fitting, recycled silicone rubber that is durable.” I’ve seen bulkier cases on the market that don’t recharge your phone, this a good alternative to those. The Ap1201 doubles the battery life of your phone.

This case works like an external battery for your phone. That is, the phone uses the power off the case’s battery first before tapping into its own power. The drawbacks to the case is that it can only charge off your computer and not off  a wall socket. Also, since your phone is always charging when the case is on it doesn’t go into sleep mode as often. On the plus side, the USB cable that comes with the case syncs to your computer like the the one Apple provides.

After getting used carrying around the AP1201, I decided it was time to get a screen protector as well. (If I’m going to protect it, may as well go all the way.) Now, instead of babying the phone at crags, I keep it out of my pack without fear of scratching or braking it. Who knows, at this rate I might even bring up multi-pitch outings, I’ll just have to find a sure way to keep from dropping it first.
