The REEL ROCK tour returns to Boulder September 13 and 14th, with a new venue at The Chautauqua Auditorium. Now in it’s seventh year, the film tour is the brainchild of Boulder native Peter Mortimer and Josh Lowell, who moved to Boulder from New York City to join forces with Mortimer.
Mortimer, 38, “got obsessed” with climbing while a student at Fairview High School and learned the art of filmmaking in college in New York City and grad school in L.A. He founded REEL ROCK with Lowell in 2006. That first year, they did 40 shows. Last year, they did close to 350 all around the world, drawing more than 65,000 people. “It’s become even bigger than we could ever have imagined,” says Mortimer. “And we’ve been able to bring in so many other filmmakers, which brings up the quality, the enthusiasm, and the interest level. It’s probably the greatest idea that we’ve ever had.”
Mortimer says this year’s four films are REEL ROCK’s best yet. From the non-conformist world of offwidth climbing to the newfound fame of the boundary-pushing sport of free soloing, REEL ROCK combines the biggest names in the sport with stories of pushing the limits like never before. From battling Himalayan peaks to a battle on Spanish limestone to establish the world’s first 5.15c, this year’s films will get your palms sweating from beginning to end. “They’re amazing stories, and really deep,” he says. “They’re the kind of stories that totally transcend what people of when they think climbing and adventure films.”
