It might seem a little funny for a landlocked state like ours to have a submarine named after it, but the reality of it is we have lots of Colorado natives joining the Navy and working to defend our freedom across the board. This submarine will be the fourth naval vessel to carry the name Colorado and like all others in the Navy it needs a crest, a symbol to represent the ship itself and those who serve on it throughout its projected 33 year lifespan. Are you up for the challenge of designing the emblem to represent the submarine named after our state?
The contest is two-tiered: a Senior Division contest, which includes an award of a $1,500 scholarship for the winner and a round-trip for two to the submarine’s commissioning in Groton, CT in 2016, requires a print ready digital graphics image file and a $10 entry fee. The Junior Division contest is aimed at younger children and is to be submitted on paper not larger than 8.5 X 11” along with the submission form found on the Committee’s web site, usscoloradocommittee.org. Students in Middle School (up to and including 8th grade) may opt to compete either in the Junior Division or the Senior Division. The Ship’s Commanding Officer, will select the winner from each category.
The State of Colorado is honored by the naming of the Navy’s upcoming attack submarine after our great state. USS Colorado (SSN 788) started construction in March of 2012 at Electric boat Shipyard in Groton, CT and is expected to be commissioned in late 2016. She is the 15th of the Virginia class submarines.
