By the thousands they arrived, wings flapping so loudly it sounded like a jet passing overhead. Their coos and cries echoed throughout the chilly Nebraska night, and their bodies saturated the already blue, vast waters of the Platte River. From late February to early April, over eighty percent of the world’s Sand Hill Crane population can be found dining in corn fields, sleeping in rivers, and blanketing the skyline of central Nebraska.
