It’s cold outside—so cold, the thermometer barely manages to rise above zero. But inside, bundled up in a makeshift blanket fort and surrounded by a dizzying sea of tissues and cold medicine, it’s burning up. Somewhere out there, the mountains are calling me, but I can’t hear the sound. The bitter cold outside has ushered in a bitter silence that reverberates throughout the walls of my head. The still snowfall and the stoic sky absorb the quiet, but as the sun begins to set over the silent landscape, a gentle cry rings out in the night—drifting to my window on the waves of the chilly night air.
Curious, I emerge from my cold haze and venture outside to see who calls in the night.
