Become an Adventure Writer – Go Rafting

There are lots of dream jobs out there and many of them are a bit far fetched to reach for. But there is one dream job within grasp, that of an adventure writer. And The Writer’s Workshop has joined up with Solitude River Trips to offer one of the best ways to get into the business—on a raft trip.

Award-winning author Nicholas O’Connell will guide aspiring writers as they plunge into this awesome journey down one of the wildest and most turbulent stretches of whitewater anywhere. This 106 mile stretch of the Middle Fork of the Salmon River in Idaho will get you to whoop and holler as you crash through the whitewater. Then, each evening you will get to turn the heart-pounding adventures into taut and indelible prose as you learn the tricks of the adventure writing trade in the most amazing outdoor classroom you’ll ever experience. Gravitate to the front of the raft to gulp heaping helpings of whitewater. Sit in back for a rollercoaster ride through the wild and scenic Salmon River Canyon.

On this first annual trip, you’ll learn how to channel your inward Edward Abbey as you transform the excitement of the trip—rugged mountain scenery, churning rapids, and the camaraderie of an expedition—into a gripping tale. You’ll get a firsthand view of how a professional adventure travel writer makes this happen.

This six-day intensive class (Aug. 1-7) will reveal secrets of Nature and Adventure writing and give you expert, insider advice about how to publish these stories. After a day of river running and writing, you’ll enjoyed deluxe “glamping” complete with gourmet meals prepared in Dutch Ovens and open-flame grills, washed down with bottles of chilled wine, the perfect way to top off a deluxe river trip in one of the remote and beautiful places in the United States.

And, once you’ve written your masterpiece, be sure to pitch the story to us!

The cost will be $2,260/person for the rafting trip and $400 for the writing instruction. For more information about this trip visit thewritersworkshop.net. For more information about Solitude River Trips visit rivertrips.com.
