It’s winter carnival in the self-proclaimed powder capital of Colorado, which is why I’m heading to Steamboat as soon as this work day is over. Here’s why: The schedule lists events in two main categories, those including horses and those without.
Seriously. In the winter.
As much as I love winter on the Front Range (snow, sunshine, mud), I love winter even more in a ski town, where the snowbanks pile higher than your waist, and mittens, hats, and jackets are necessary from November through April. Here in Boulder, it’s guaranteed I will not be ski joring any time soon. This weekend in Steamboat, I stand a chance at being at one end of the rope.
There’s a muzzle loading contest, nordic races, and other street events.
Plus, Saturday night, Lighted Man is going to shred down Howelsen Hill bedecked in live fireworks. I’ve gone 35 years without seeing this, and that’s just wrong.
Are you tempted yet? Stay tuned for more updates through the weekend. Better yet, get up there yourself. Here’s a cheat sheet for planning your last minute trip:
Where to stay: Splurge and hit up the newly renovated slopeside Sheraton. My family and I will be calling this luxury pad home for the next two days, and I am really excited to report back on what a $20 million renovation looks like.
What to do: In addition to checking out the winter carnival (click here for a schedule), go skiing! It’s supposed to snow, and I’m planning on hitting Christmas Tree bowl first thing (right after I drop the baby off at nursery).
Where to eat: The Tugboat Grill & Pub’s been quenching thirsty locals since 1972. (1860 Ski Time Square, 920-879-7070).
I’m a relative newbie to Steamboat, so if you have suggestions on what to do while there, leave a comment and I’ll try to check it out.
